‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ Movie Review- Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Padnekar, Anupam Kher

The much-awaited movie ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ has been released today at the box office, starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Padnekar. Toilet is a satiric comedy produced by Neeraj Pandey and Akshay Kumar, directed by Shree Narayan Singh and penned by the writers of ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Raam-Leela’ Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal.

The basic plot of the film is about the ignorance of toilets in the people of the village. Though it was believed that the movie is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but in an interview, Akshay shunned the reports. And after watching the film, it has been 100 % proved that this film is a part of PM Modi’s brand promotion of Clean India Drive.

Well, if it is so, then there is no harm because it is a good step towards and development. The story of the film is about a newly wed couple Jaya plays by Bhumi Padnekar and Keshav portrays by Akshay Kumar. Jaya who after marriage comes to Keshav’s house, next morning got to know that there is no toilet in his house and everybody defecate in the farm.

Jaya couldn’t accept the situation and both Jaya and Keshav tried hard to get the toilet in their house. But Keshav’s father and other villagers do not agree on it, and said in the house where we live, eat and worship God, how can we built a toilet and defecate.

Eventually, Jaya leaves Keshav’s house and goes back to her parent’s house. She also puts a condition that if the toilet is not built then she will not going to come back. And from there Akshay’s started a campaign in his house and village to built a toilet. Due to which Akshay even has to go to jail and in midst of all this Jaya sends him divorce papers.

So, Keshav and Jaya got divorced due to a toilet? Is Keshav become successful to convince his father and villagers to build a toilet? To know all this you have to watch the film, as I am here to review the movie not to tell you the story.

Now, let’s see the film from my perspective. The plot of the film is really good, inspiring and based on a true event. The screenplay of the film is overall good, but some scenes became boring while showcasing the necessity of a toilet and justifying Jaya’s stand.

The direction of Shree Narayan Singh is commendable and we have already seen his work as an editor in films like MS Dhoni, Baby, Rustom, Special 26, Wednesday, etc. I personally liked his work as a director, but at some places, the background score of the film becomes a bit of a suspense thriller, which reminds me of films like Baby and Special 26.

If we talk about the acting, Akshay gave a power-packed performance as usual. He did a tremendous job, even Bhumi gave a wonderful performance as she did in her debut movie ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. She is a very natural actress and completely changed her look and appearance for the film, as we saw her as a chubby girl in her debut movie and now she has totally got transformed. Anupam Kher is again a great actor and was there in the film for a small role, but still left the mark.

Film’s cinematography is amazing, the location has been very well shot. It seems as you have reached that location, Anshuman Mahaley has captured Mathura city beautifully. According to me, the film is a fine entertaining movie with a social message, so it is a must watch film. Overall my rating to Toilet: EK Prem Katha is 3.5 out of 5.
