Movie Review Of Begum Jaan: Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah

Today, Vidya Balan’s starrer Begum Jaan is released at the box office. The movie is the Hindi remake of Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film Raj Kahini. Written and directed by Srijit Mukherji, dialogues by Kausar Mooneyer, screenplay by Srijit Mukherji and Kausar Mooneyer and produced by Mukesh Bhatt and Vishesh Bhatt.

Begum Jaan has quite elaborated start cast. Along with Vidhya Balan, Ila Arun Naseeruddin Shah, Ashish Vidyarthi, Rajit Kapoor, Vivek Mushran, Chunkey Pandey, Gauhar Khan and Pallavi Sharda are also in the movie in pivotal roles.

If we talk about the plot of the story, Srijit Mukherji has chosen the time of independence for Begum Jaan. Begum Jaan is a brothel’s woman and in her brothel, there are girls of every caste and religion, who kills the persecutor of the society, persecution of the men and who does not find any place to live. Begum Jaan gives shelter to these girls and in return she wants them to work as a prostitute.

Sir Cyril Radcliffe set the line to divide India and Pakistan, Begum Jaan’s brothel also came between where they set the line for the division. But she did not want to leave her brothel because the King of that place i.e. Naseeruddin Shah also visits that brothel to enjoy the services.

Begum Jaan was not ready to leave her brothel, her home, her place, so she refuses to accept the Government’s orders and revolts. Then the Government nominees of India Hari Prasad (Ashish Vidyarthi) and Pakistan Ilias (Rajit Kapoor) hire a non-governmental help from Kabir (Chunkey Pandey) who plays the role of a contract killer in the film.

So, will Kabir be able to take that place from Begum Jaan? What happens to Raja Saheb? What happens to the girls living in that place? To know all this you have to watch the film because I am here to review it, not to tell you the story.

Now let’s see the movie from my perspective. If we talk about the screenplay, in addition to the main story of Begum Jaan, several side stories were attempted to connect with the main story which deviated the movie. Masterji’s character played by Vivek Mushran is not at all important, overall the screenplay could get better which make the film a blockbuster.

Talking about the performances, everyone did a great job especially Chunkey Pandey. He lived his character very well and will remain in your memory for quite well time. Vidya Balan plays the main lead and did a tremendous job but her performance in the movie reminds me Vidya of Ishqiya and The Dirty Picture.

Overall the film is a must watch, it gives you a message that men torture women and also refuses. My rating for this film is 3 out of 5.

Hope you liked my review and will be back soon next week with another movie review, till then take care and don’t forget to like, share, comment and subscribe to my channel.
